Cold water storage tank repairs and upgrades

Help with traditional cold-water storage tanks and accessible associated pipework, including leaking valves, overflows, lids, insulation and practical repairs. We can assess the tank condition and explain when repair is sensible and when replacement should be considered.

What we can help with

Common cold-water tank problems

Older tanks can remain serviceable for years, but damaged lids, failed valves, overflows and deteriorating fittings should not be ignored.

Running overflows

Ball-valve or level-control faults causing water to discharge through the overflow.

Leaking fittings

Leaks around accessible tank connectors, valves and associated pipework.

Damaged or missing lids

Poorly fitting covers that leave stored water inadequately protected.

Insulation issues

Missing or damaged jackets and exposed pipework in cold roof spaces.

Poor tank condition

Cracks, distortion, heavy contamination or deterioration that may justify replacement.

Access concerns

Tight loft access or unsafe boarding that can affect what work is practical.

How we approach it

Repair what is sound; replace what is failing

A valve or overflow problem does not automatically mean the whole tank needs replacing. Equally, there is little value in spending heavily on fittings if the tank itself is badly deteriorated.

Where the tank is otherwise sound, practical improvements such as a suitable rigid lid and insulation can make sense. Where the vessel is failing, we explain the replacement route.

Useful to know

Loft tanks need practical protection

Cold-water storage tanks sit in environments where dust, debris and freezing temperatures can all matter, so lids and insulation are not just cosmetic details.

Proper cover

A sound, suitable lid helps protect stored water from debris and contamination.

Insulation

The tank and vulnerable pipework may need suitable insulation in cold roof spaces.

Overflow warning

A running overflow is a sign of a fault and should be investigated.

Replacement access

Large tanks may require planning around loft openings and safe removal routes.

Questions

Cold water storage tank FAQs

Can you repair a leaking or overflowing tank?

Often yes, depending on whether the fault is in the valve, fitting, pipework or the tank body itself.

Can you make a lid for an older tank?

Where appropriate, a sound rigid lid can be fabricated or fitted to improve protection, subject to the tank shape and condition.

Should an old tank always be replaced?

No. Condition matters more than age alone. A sound tank with a repairable valve fault may not need replacement.

What if the tank itself is cracked or deteriorated?

If the vessel is failing, replacement is normally more sensible than trying to patch a structurally poor tank.
