Room-by-room heat loss calculations

Heat Loss Calculations

Heat-loss assessment to understand how much heat each room and the property as a whole needs before sizing a low-temperature heating or heat-pump system.

What we can help with

Room-by-room heat loss calculations

Room-by-room losses

Calculation of heat demand by room rather than relying only on a whole-house rule of thumb.

Building fabric inputs

Consideration of walls, floors, roofs, glazing and relevant insulation assumptions.

Design temperatures

Use of sensible internal and external design conditions for the intended heating system.

Emitter requirements

Heat-loss results can be used to assess radiator or underfloor-heating output requirements.

Heat-pump design input

A proper heat-loss figure gives the design process a better basis than simply matching an old boiler output.

Upgrade planning

The calculation can show where fabric or emitter improvements could reduce the required flow temperature or system size.

How we approach it

Start with the building demand before selecting equipment

Heat pumps and other low-temperature systems work best when the heat source, emitters and controls are designed around the actual property. A room-by-room heat-loss calculation provides the foundation for that design rather than guessing from floor area or the size of an existing boiler.

Renewables standard: Work is planned and undertaken in line with MCS guidance and applicable standards where relevant. This does not state or imply MCS certification or accreditation.

Local coverage

Service across Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire

LDM Group UK covers Farnborough, Frimley, Camberley, Aldershot, Fleet, Farnham and surrounding areas. Availability depends on the type and location of the job.

Questions

Heat Loss Calculations FAQs

Why not just size a heat pump from my existing boiler?

Boilers are often oversized and their rated output does not tell you the actual heat loss of the building. A heat-loss calculation gives a much better design basis.

Does a heat-loss calculation tell me which radiators need changing?

It provides the room heat demand. That can then be compared with radiator output at the proposed flow and return temperatures.

Is this useful before a heat-pump quote?

Yes. It helps turn a rough proposal into a design based on the actual building rather than assumptions.
